Spreading Dynamics of a Viral Infection in a Complex Network
نویسندگان
چکیده
We report a computational study of the spreading dynamics of a viral infection in a complex (scale-free) network. The final epidemic size distribution (FESD) was found to be unimodal or bimodal depending on the value of the basic reproductive number 0 R . The FESDs occurred on time-scales long enough for intermediate-time epidemic size distributions (IESDs) to be important for control measures. The usefulness of 0 R for deciding on the timeliness and intensity of control measures was found to be limited by the multimodal nature of the IESDs and by its inability to inform on the speed at which the infection spreads through the population. A reduction of the transmission probability at the hubs of the scale-free network decreased the occurrence of the larger-sized epidemic events of the multimodal distributions. For effective epidemic control, an early reduction in transmission at the index cell and its neighbors was essential. Keywords—Basic reproductive number, epidemic control, scalefree network, viral infection.

Scaling of the propagation of epidemics in a system of mobile agents
For a two-dimensional system of agents modeled by molecular dynamics, we simulate epidemics spreading, which was recently studied on complex networks. Our resulting network model is time-evolving. We study the transitions to spreading as function of density, temperature and infection time. In addition, we analyze the epidemic threshold associated to a power-law distribution of infection times.
متن کاملA Preliminary Study on Effects of Community Structures on Epidemic Spreading and Detection in Complex Networks
Community structures widely exist in almost all real-life networks. Extensive researches have been carried out on detecting community structures in complex networks. However, many aspects of how community structures may affect the dynamics and properties of complex networks still remain unclear. In this work, we examine the impacts of community structures on the epidemic spreading and detection...
متن کاملStochastic Simulation of HIV Population Dynamics through Complex Network Modeling
Despite the availability of a large number of mathematical models describing the spreading of HIV, a good understanding of the spreading dynamics through numerical analyses is still a major challenge. The true incidence of the HIV/AIDS-epidemic is quite uncertain since many people may be unaware of their infection; moreover HIV has a very long asymptotic incubation period which makes study of t...
متن کاملViral spreading of daily information in online social networks
We explain a possible mechanism of an information spreading on a network which spreads extremely far from a seed node, namely the viral spreading. On the basis of a model of the information spreading in an online social network, in which the dynamics is expressed as a random multiplicative process of the spreading rates, we will show that the correlation between the spreading rates enhances the...
متن کاملLow prevalence, quasi-stationarity and power-law behavior in a model of contagion spreading
While contagion (information, infection, etc.) spreading has been extensively studied recently, the role of active local agents has not been fully considered. Here, we propose and study a model of spreading which takes into account the strength or quality of contagions as well as the local probabilistic dynamics occurring at various nodes. Transmission occurs only after the quality-based fitnes...
